After college, I want to move way out west in the mountains. I have some family who lives there and I fall in love with it all over again every time I visit.
Where I come from almost everyone had either a pickup truck or a station wagon, because there was a lot of farm land and all. I guess it really depends on where you live and what you need the car for. What kinds of cars work best in the mountains and the desert? I’m looking into buying a car now and I want to be prepared.
I’ll most likely be carrying around a lot of things (such as guitars and other random yet large items). Would camping vans work? Plus I’ll be taking a lot of road trips cross-country.
Thanks.

I’m interested in taking an extended (months long) trip around the US without returning home until the end. Not interested in a motor home- been there and done that- but want to bring a large quantity of clothes of all types, shorts, suits, etc. Daily travel will be generally short, less than 100 miles. Will usually stay in hotels/motels but also want to bring a camp stove, cooler, tent and related gear. There will be two people traveling. I’ve looked at vans, SUVs, minivans, and sedans without reaching a conclusion. Anyone done this? Any suggestions?

I’ve always loved vans and am now looking into buying one. Thing is I don’t know the first thing about vehicles let alone vans. I am looking for something that will be easy for me to work on myself and not have to take to a professional. It has to be roomy since I plan to take it with when camping and traveling. Alright gas mileage is a plus though I do know vans are gas hogs. I’d really love something from the 70s but would be willing to sacrifice that. Also, like I said, this will be for traveling so I’ll be majorly redoing the inside. Nothing like adding a sink but I will want to be able to sleep in it if I have to. Though this will be my everyday vehicle as well. Currently there is no set budget since this probably wont happen until next year but if there is a really great suggestion that will end up costing a lot I’m still willing to wait. So, any suggestions?
