www.coa.edu 07.06.2008 – Gates Community Center Butcher has been photographing America’s most beautiful and complex ecosystems for over 30 years. His outsize enlargements and giclee prints offer the viewer the sense of entering the image , becoming a part of his diorama-like spaces. The spirit of 17th century explorer Samuel de Champlain, discoverer of Mount Desert Island, lives on at College of the Atlantic. Just as Captain Champlain ventured through uncharted waters almost 400 years ago, College of the Atlantic is today charting a new kind of education for citizens of the future. The Champlain Society honors those individuals of vision and commitment who are major donors to the colleges annual fund. Champlain Society members are invited to participate in a variety of cultural and scientific activities meant to stimulate intellectual curiosity. Each summer, these lectures are made available to Champlain Society members and brought to you through the COA Thorndike Library Collection.
www.wgby.org Sunday, September 27, 8pm This new Ken Burns documentary series traces the birth of the national park idea and its evolution for nearly 150 years. It is the uniquely American idea of preserving extraordinary places in the country for the enjoyment of everyone.
The winter season in the park is winding down. A couple of special visitors who saw the wonders of winter in Yellowstone this year are the principals behind a new documentary about our national parks that will air nationally this fall on PBS. Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan have delved deeply into the Civil War, the sport of baseball and World War II among many other subjects. A January visit to Yellowstone was Burns first winter tour of the park:
www.pbs.org When Congress failed to appropriate money for the park’s protection in 1886, General Philip Sheridan sent the US Cavalry to Yellowstone to maintain order in the park. This story of the parks’ first protectors appears in Ken Burns’s newest film, THE NATIONAL PARKS: AMERICA’S BEST IDEA, premiering Sunday-Friday, September 27-October 2, 2009, at 8 pm ET/PT. For more information on the film, visit www.pbs.org
