What’s the best vehicle for long term travel?

Posted: August 6th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Q & A | Tags: , , , , , | 4 Comments »

I’m interested in taking an extended (months long) trip around the US without returning home until the end. Not interested in a motor home- been there and done that- but want to bring a large quantity of clothes of all types, shorts, suits, etc. Daily travel will be generally short, less than 100 miles. Will usually stay in hotels/motels but also want to bring a camp stove, cooler, tent and related gear. There will be two people traveling. I’ve looked at vans, SUVs, minivans, and sedans without reaching a conclusion. Anyone done this? Any suggestions?

Conversion vans are great for road trips. So are Suburbans.

You may burn more gas toting all the clothing stuff around than it costs to buy new at times.

I’d go with a minivan with the all/some seats removed- able to be parked in more places too. Forget the SUV unless you want offroadish type travel over 50% of the time or plan on winter travel (fwd minivan isn’t bad in winter also.)

Well if money is not the problem and from your question it does not seem to be the factor, I would choose the Chevy Tahoe or Suburban. They have room for all your clothes and roomy to drive. The gas is not that great but hey if your traveling around the U.S. you should be alright. Also if you run into bad weather hey your in a chevy baby nuff said LOL have fun and send Pics.

If there is just two people in the car and you are not sleeping in it then almost any car would work. I would say a hatchback of some sort will provide you with the most room. A car will be easier to drive than a truck/suv and it will get much better fuel economy.
