Journeyfilm was there on April 9th when Andrew Skurka began his attempt to become the first person to complete the Great Western Loop, a 6875-mile footpath that consisting of the Pacific Crest Trail, The Pacific Northwest Trail, The Continental Divide Trail, The Arizona Trail, and a self-made segment through the Sonoran and Mojave Deserts. He began from Grandview Point on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, and so long as things go well he will return there seven months later, in early-November, after having passed through many of the most cherished and pristine wild lands in the Lower 48, including 12 National Parks and over 75 wilderness areas. The Great Western Loop highlights the cumulative magnificence of America’s West, its long-distance trail system, and its National Parks, while also highlighting the environmental and ecological threats that they all share.
Way to go man! I am doing a little trail connecting myself! Only some of the big trails don’t allow horses so since I can’t ride the appalachian I have to make my own trail on that one. Maybe we’ll run into each other in the future.
@maddox019 It appears to be more of an athletic challenge than an appreciation of nature.
I’m so glad andy skurka was sent here to save the universe.
@maddox019 People would say the same thing to us on the PCT, and I would explain that it is not possible to hike fast enough to blur the scenery and you don’t miss anything. If you are talking about taking a break, you do that too, even when you hike 40-50 miles per day. Thanks for watching and for your comment.
@maddox019 Hike your own hike, buddy. If you plan in doing 6875 miles in a couple hundred day, I dont think you are going to get it done by a slow pace and taking in every vista for 20 minutes.
Has anybody seen how fast this guy hikes…he didn’t stop and take in the view of that canyon…this guy is a f’n joke…
this just blows my mind, I can Legitimately say – Andy you are my hero
did andy travel from food stache to food stache with corresponding gbs coordinates? and how far were they apart?
@Jarose389 Thanks for the interest. The song from the Andy Skurka video is “Shaver’s Song” from the ablum “Strength Over Callous” by Blackyear. It is available on iTunes for download and Journeyfilm as a CD.

I met Andrew last year, what a cool guy… he started my ultra-light backpacking philosophy, I was supposed to meet him again last night before a presentation but I unfortunately got real sick.
I was hoping to run thru my current gear with him. bummer.
