www.coa.edu 07.06.2008 – Gates Community Center Butcher has been photographing America’s most beautiful and complex ecosystems for over 30 years. His outsize enlargements and giclee prints offer the viewer the sense of entering the image , becoming a part of his diorama-like spaces. The spirit of 17th century explorer Samuel de Champlain, discoverer of Mount Desert Island, lives on at College of the Atlantic. Just as Captain Champlain ventured through uncharted waters almost 400 years ago, College of the Atlantic is today charting a new kind of education for citizens of the future. The Champlain Society honors those individuals of vision and commitment who are major donors to the colleges annual fund. Champlain Society members are invited to participate in a variety of cultural and scientific activities meant to stimulate intellectual curiosity. Each summer, these lectures are made available to Champlain Society members and brought to you through the COA Thorndike Library Collection.
